Henkin bought Conn in late 1980, and the serial numbers began to change, with different prefixes and an extra digit appearing in the HX-serials. Otherwise, their serial numbers would be very long, since the company goes back over a century. At some point Conn started their serial numbers over again, meaning that some of the modern horns have serial numbers that correspond to the ones used in the 30's and 40's.

It has the current bell engraving and has a serial number of 844XXX. Modern slides seem to have serial numbers like "D 2300." I just bought a 8D (French) horn that appears to be quite new. The 8H I had from just a few years ago had 252XXX. Current horns seem to have a 6-digit number with no prefix. The first thing to look for is the bell engraving. When Conn moved to Abilene, Texas they did make horns with six digit serial numbers that drastically overlap the Elkhart numbers. A Conn 8D with a six digit serial number and no letter prefix is not necessarily an Elkhart 8D.
